Now here’s something different: Graham Reynolds and his Golden Arm Trio will bring their progressive jazz fusion to what’s turning out to be the most diverse Fun Fun Fun Fest ever. The name of his act is kind of a misnomer – while Erik Grostic, Jon Dexter and Jermone Smith assist with bass, cello and trombone, respectively, the group can swell to include up to forty folks and shrink down to just Reynolds if the mood strikes him. If you’ve been paying any attention, Reynolds’ name pops up quite often in the creative community, from collaborating to present the dance and musical project Cult of Color to scoring the Richard Linklater film A Scanner Darkly, and much more.

Connecticut native Pepi Ginsberg got her break when, after recording two albums on her own, Scott McMicken of Dr. Dog asked her to travel to Philadelphia to record a song with him. Naturally, a song became another song, and eventually the album Red surfaced. Says Ginsberg: “I went down and it was just good vibes from day one…we created a schedule and the Brown Chair, White Room Manifesto which was a collection of our ideas on what we thought was a good way to approach an analogue record and stick to basics, no reverb, no plug-ins, just music and spirit.” The unadorned, freewheeling spirit comes through on songs like “The Waterline” and “In My Bones,” reminiscent of the folksy charm most often associated with the nicer side of the sixties. See Ginsberg and Reynolds back to back starting at 3:40 on Saturday at Stage 2.
