College Station McCain Worker Fakes Attack
20-year-old Ashley Todd, originally from College Station, Texas and working for the McCain campaign in Pittsburgh, gained national fame yesterday after claiming that she had been assaulted and robbed, allegedly by an Obama fan who noticed the McCain bumper sticker on her car and "became enraged." What made the story even more sensationalistic was the fact that the assailant, whom she initially described as a 6-foot-4-tall black man, also reportedly carved the letter 'B' into her cheek, presumably meant to reference 'Barack', or, less likely, a shout-out to bacon.
But, as it turns out, that initial was better served standing in for the word "bullshit," as authorities now believe that Todd faked the attack, and that the injuries were self-inflicted.
Local TV station KDKA reports (via E&P):
Police say a campaign volunteer confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter B in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker. At a news conference this afternoon, officials said they believe that Ashley Todd's injuries were self-inflicted.
Todd, 20, of Texas, is now facing charges for filing a false report to police.
Pittsburgh police have said that Todd will face charges, but are unsure as to what they will be.
