The Backyard (13101 W Highway 71)
FREE, Doors at 3pm
[info]
On Saturday, fans will have a chance to come out and search for one of her fabled red locks that may have been cast down into the pebbled audience area in the midst of her intense live shows...dripping in sweat...gyrating like a wounded tiger...hammering those lucky, lucky keys. AHEM.
In all seriousness, you'll most likely be drawn to the Backyard on Saturday for two reasons:
1) It's FREE. That means "requires no money." With the economy in the toilet and your 401k reduced to a handful of dried azuka beans, that concept should resonate.
2) The great lineup. We're talking about the steamy SRV-meets-Flamenco of Texan shred sextet Del Castillo, the ever industrious pop-rockers of The Boxing Lesson, swinging jazz-blues throwback of the White Ghost Shivers, and the "soulful American rock" of Alpha Rev, not to mention several more to tickle your fickle fancy.
While it is still up in the air as to whether The Big B is going to re-open at another location, there's still time to absorb the history at this fabled venue. So drive out into the country and catch it before the shopping centers and big-box superstores devour the poor bugger and turn it into another sepulcher in their giant, cement graveyard. Give Old Navy and Bed, Bath, and Beyond the finger while you're at it. Bastards.

Tori Amos "greatest living artist". Good lord man! Please reclaim your penis after your acid trip.
someone has a problem grasping IRONY...
All facetiousness aside, even if Josh did really like Tori Amos, why does that mean he has no penis? I've been contemplating this question for awhile now. If a woman likes death metal that is sung by a man, does that mean she has no ovaries/vagina/breasts or other gender specific organs? From my experience, women don't tend to be ridiculed for enjoying music produced by the opposite sex.
Why is it that male artists are universally acceptable, but if you are a man and want to listen to a female sing pop music, you are suddenly labeled a eunich? What if it was the same song/lyric sung by a man? Are all female artists considered lame, or just the known feminists?
I'm seriously interested in this phenomenon, so any insight is appreciated. The comments section of Austinist may not be the best venue for social discourse, but what the hell.
And no, I'm not a Tori Amos fan.
I will say that Tori Amos's shows at The Backyard were excellent. But not as good as the Dylan shows, the Yes shows, and the many Widespread Panic shows.
I already miss The Backyard. I guess we're stuck with the shittier-than-ever Austin Music Hall now.
