Based on a dream that Dallas-based puppet-master Ricki Vincent had back in January, the show is set inside a tiny goblin tavern called The Nauseous Fairy. The theatre is a small space (seats 16!) tucked behind an actual tavern, The Peacock. Guests enter the dark venue shortly before the event begins and sit inside a fairy circle while the action surrounds them. We were warned not to leave the protected circle, or eat or drink anything that might be offered.
This very brief musical production, written and directed by Vincent, includes both goblin-centric banter and old standards that have been goblin-ized…like “It’s a Goblin’s Life For Me,” a revised version of the Disney-tune "Yo, Ho (A Pirate’s Life For Me)". The show clocks in at well under an hour, so children won't have time to get squirmy. Sunday performances take place in a lighted theater to make things less spooky, and as such are G-rated for kiddos 7-10.
While we were amazed at the construction of the puppets, technical problems marred our enjoyment of the show. The sound was far too loud for such a small space, making it hard to understand the dialogue between Pussnickel (Jessie Evans) and Snitzwhistle (Rosalyn Nguyen). (Our companion even watched with fingers plugging his sensitive ears.) Sadly, while the lighting was wonderfully atmospheric and spooky, the lights were far too dim for us to really see what was going on, leaving us frustrated. We hate missing goblin-on-goblin action.
It is delightful to see something this innovative happening in Austin, and we’re down with the amazing job that this show did outing the goblin world. We just wish that we could have seen more. The puppets, constructed by Vincent, Cammille Deprand, and Mat Ward looked amazing in the light, especially the character of the bigger-than-life-pile-of-garbage, Uriah Heep.
Puppeteers Vincent, Camille DePrang, Andrew Varenhorst, Karen Pawson, Katy Fachon, Madison Mathews, and Dannie Hammer rounded out the cast of this quirky show.
