Weekend Music Preview: Ladies Rock Camp

Girls Rock Camp Austin offers up education, instruction, and inspiration at its Ladies Rock Camp this weekend. As per the website, “Girls Rock Camp Austin is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering girls and women of all backgrounds and abilities through musical education and performance.” Ladies Rock Camp (for women ages 19 and up -- no prior experience required) takes place at The Griffin School and Sri Atmananda Memorial School over the course of the weekend. The cost is $350 and includes various workshops as well as meals, with proceeds benefiting Girls Rock Camp Austin. It all leads up to the “Ladies Rock Camp Showcase” this Sunday at Creekside Lounge where new material, penned and rehearsed at the camp, will be presented to the public by budding musicians. Follow That Bird! and The Dreadful Sorrys are also scheduled to perform; the event kicks off at 7 p.m.

Deer Tick, the brainchild of John McCauley, live in concert is another option on Sunday evening. We caught up with McCauley earlier this year to learn more about his influences, collaborations, and AS220. McCauley is somewhat of a prodigy -- the only formal training he received during his early years was for the electric bass but he is a versatile multi-instrumentalist, having taught himself how to play the guitar, drums, and more. His early recordings were self-released; 2007’s War Elephant was released on Jana Hunter’s now defunct Feow! Records. Take in McCauley’s poignant folk ditties this Sunday at the soon to be replaced Emo’s Lounge; The Black, Chris Paddock, and Mandarin Dynasty open.

Not content with the weekend’s live music revelry? Keep going on Monday when Matt White serenades at Stubb’s (Inside) in support of his 2007 debut full-length Best Days (Tickets). The show is a part of the “Vote For Love” tour, launched earlier this month in conjunction with Gap. “Throughout the tour, Gap will give all concert goers a voucher they can use at select Gap stores to receive a 15 percent off any purchase and a chance to snag a free Matt White special edition “Vote for Love” t-shirt, while supplies last.” (Per Matt White’s official website.) Weezer at Frank Erwin Center and Girl Talk at Emo’s (Outside) are two solid alternatives if you’re planning a Monday night out on town.
