There's something in the water affecting documentary filmmakers lately, because this week marks the third time this month a high-profile doc has been freely released to the public. We told you about the other two here, and over here. Maybe it's the election, or maybe it's the recession, but it's starting to look like a sea-change in distribution patterns.

Tonight KLRU screens The Choice 2008, a new film co-written and co-produced by Peabody-winning filmmaker and UT professor Paul Stekler, who'll be there tonight.

If you missed Stekler's last project, 2004's excellent Last Man Standing, now'd be a good time to catch up. So unpeel your eyeballs from CNN for a few hours, and go hear some behind-the-scenes dirt. Evan Smith, President and (still) editor-in-chief of Texas Monthly interviews Stekler at 7:30, before the show airs at 8, when everyone will crowd around KLRU's TV to watch Frontline. Despite the fact that his appearance on The Real World—Austin wasn't as cool as we imagined, this interview will probably be worth the free RSVP and the obligatory wearing of clothes.

If you can't make it — bummer! Oh, well permission to be lazy: The Choice airs on KLRU tonight at 8, and becomes a free iTunes download on October 15.

RSVP here for tonight's screening.
