Longhorn Hoops: News and Notes
Abrams is the Longhorns' leading returning scorer, having averaged 16.5 points per game last season. He declared for the NBA Draft in April, but later decided to return to Texas for his senior year. James led the team in rebounding a year ago, averaging 10.3 boards per game to go with 13.2 points.
The All-Big 12 team is selected by the league's head coaches.
Recruiting Update
The Horns' 2009 recruiting class got a big boost last week, securing the services of Jordan Hamilton from Compton, California. The 6-7 forward averaged 27 points and 11 rebounds per game in his junior season and is currently ranked as the 13th-best high school prospect by Scout.com.
Hamilton joins an already impressive recruiting class that features shooting guard Avery Bradley, another Top-10 recruit, and 6-7 forward Shawn Williams from Duncanville.
Recruits cannot officially sign letters of intent until November 12.
Barnes to Receive Coaching Award
Coach Rick Barnes will receive the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching award this coming April when the 2009 Wooden Awards are presented to the nation's top men's and women's college basketball players.
Barnes has led the Longhorns to the NCAA Tournament in each of his 10 seasons as head coach, and is currently tied for the nation's third longest streak of consecutive tournament appearances at 13. During his tenure, Texas has produced 10 NBA draft picks and two Wooden Award winners, T.J. Ford in 2003 and Kevin Durant in 2007.
