AFF Preview: Zach Galifianakis Gets Serious In Visioneers
The film is shot in dark color tones, replicating George Washington Winsterhammerman's (Galifianakis) dreary job as a "visioneer," which requires him to wear strange glasses and sit at a desk, though we never discover exactly what his job entails.
Drama arises when it's learned that the team's missing member exploded. Not in a sort of espionage, car bomb, way, but spontaneous combustion due to existential crisis.
Winsterhammerman's wife stays at home, watching daytime TV that seems to be on day and night, constantly discussing self-help books. The world is turned bizarrely upside-down. Flipping the bird is the new hand-wave-hello, the Jeffers Corporation controls the President and every piece of media (okay, so maybe it's not that far fetched).
For what it's worth, Galifianakis plays a strong, if ultra-sombre, part, and despite not smiling for the length of the film, we'll definitely be seeing him in other dramatic projects. This one has a strong whiff of "cult status" to it.
