I don't know many bar hopping homeless dudes, Chief. Maybe the cops should get rid of the crack dealers?
Acevedo seems to be lacking the fundemental common sense you'd think we'd expect from our city's top law enforcement officer.
Move it
Yes. Move ARCH away. Far away. Maybe somewhere rural. You know, where they can learn skills and contribute to society by working the land. Then don't let them leave.
But seriously:
I once heard the land for ARCH was gifted to the organization by a former lawyer, specifically to spite the city of Austin.
Doesn't seem like the most auspicious beginning.
And while 'temptation' might be a condescending term, they are too close to easy drug access, a nightly situation where they can prey upon the inebriated, extort you for money as you park your car, and otherwise act like parasites. Nor is it a positive environment for the temporarily homeless (especially those with children) who actually have the desire and a realistic chance of recovering from the source of their hard times.
I know that the Salvation Army takes in homeless families with children but I thought the ARCH didn't allow them.
Web site says they support "homeless individuals and their families." I guess that's still vague enough to exclude kids.
But, as things stand now, they couldn't if they wanted to.
In their FAQ they say that their focus is on the chronically homeless instead of the transitory homeless - the category most homless families would fall into.
"A “chronically homeless” person is defined as a single individual with a disabling condition,
including mental health and substance abuse problems, who has been continuously
homeless for at least a year or at least four times over the past three years.
Chronically homeless people comprise only 10% to 15% of the homeless population;
however, they use almost 50% of the service resources available to homeless people."

So, BramleyDirk, how do you like the current location of ARCH? Is there any action you'd suggest?

Scooby,I think the current location sucks, I suggest tearing it down for condos and moving it to Westlake.
