With the zany news yesterday of McCain's attempts to postpone Friday's debate -- he's suspending his campaign so that he can head to Washington and erm, help out in D.C. with this economy that's "about to crater" -- it seemed that the debate on Friday was in doubt. McCain's campaign still asserts that if the mortgage bailout doesn't happen on Friday, he won't show up. But both Obama and the Commission on Presidential Debates say the debate is on.

Our suggestions for what could happen if McCain doesn't show up:

  • Obama v. Palin - viewership for this debate would be record-breaking.
  • Jim Lehrer (the moderator) interviews Obama for 90 minutes
  • As Keith Olbermann mentioned on Letterman last night, perhaps the debate could be Obama v. Biden?

Whoever ends up debating on Friday (and you know McCain will end up there eventually, despite these shenanigans), the Alamo has got your back. Both Village and South Lamar locations will be showing the debate. We attended the Clinton/Obama debate at the South Lamar location and assume the set-up will be about the same. McCain and Obama factions will be split down the middle, although this being Austin, the Obama voters could take up at least 2/3 of the theater. Laughing at bogus answers is encouraged, but yelling "You're an idiot!" to the screen might get you in trouble.
