Wills will likely sing those words as part of her Sunday set, but they’ll be parting words for an ex-lover as opposed to words of caution to innocent vacationers. But the only spirit hanging around will be that of Joni Mitchell, whose influence is prevalent in Wills’ soulful, strummy acoustic folk. It’ll be a pleasant way to ease into Sunday for those who hit their Saturday particularly hard.
The members of The Belleville Outfit were born long after the glory days of radio, but the way they dabble in jazz, swing and honky-tonk, you’d never know. The Outfit has definite sleeper potential, particularly when violinist and vocalist Phoebe Hunt is on the mic. If the femme fatales of film noir sang their lines, they’d probably sound like Hunt, but less playful.
Fish out of water on the Sunday BMI stage, The Massacoustics are the only act not born in the South — though they do live in Nashville — and certainly the day’s most polished group. Andy and Matt Thompson make pop-rock for the Everydude, with roots that reach up along the Atlantic Coast and rest in Billy Joel’s Long Island.
Colour Revolt present a grittier alternative, powered by pointy riffs, overdrive and facial hair. It’s mood lighting for your mid-afternoon, accompanied by the most bible references you’ll hear outside of the WaMu stage.
By name alone, South Austin Jug Band should share that horror movie porch with Colour Revolt, but its songs reveal South Austin Jug Band as the product of more metropolitan surroundings. Another misleading aspect of that name: No jug. Rather, it’s laid-back folk played on bluegrass instrumentation (though that doesn’t make it bluegrass). The band’s recently released full-length Strange Invitation took its name from and features a cover of Beck’s “Jack-ass.” Does that sound like a possible onstage collaboration to anyone else?
And that’s how it all ends for the BMI Stage at the 2008 Austin City Limits Music Festival. But how does the aforementioned horror film (working title: BMI Know What You Did Last Summer) end? SPOILER ALERT: It’s not a real movie.
