The Swell Season w/Bill Callahan (8:30pm)
Although born in Maryland, Bill Callahan has called Texas home for a few years now and fits the city like a glove. A deadpan troubadour with a blackly comic worldview, Callahan's tunes work both as experimental rock records with Jim O'Rourke or as stripped-down acoustic solo sets. This performance promises the latter.
The Parish
Friday 09/26
Jamie Lidell w/Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears (11pm)
Black Joe Lewis has been getting his Ike Turner on with regular R&B-fueled blues explosions around town for a few years now. His pairing with Jamie Lidell is an inspired one: Lidell's latter-day digital soul should contrast nicely with Lewis' grittier, decidedly analog style.

Return of the Butthole Surfers w/The Kill & The Fuckemos (outside, 8pm)
History has been kind indeed to the band whose name was anathema to regional radio programmers for the first ten years of its existence. Hell, Gibby Haynes was celebrated on Fox News earlier this month. Who knows what Haynes & Co. have in store for this show, but something tells us the show will lean on older psych-skronk jams like "Graveyard." Lord knows we don't need to hear "Pepper" again.

Sunday 09/28
The Black Keys w/The Black Angels & Jessica Lee Mayfield (outside, 7:30)
The Black Angels' love of Vietnam-era psych-rock synergized remarkably with that other overseas conflict that's been in the news for the last six years, resulting in an oddly relevant retro-rock style. But make no mistake: the sound of these Angels is far darker and noisier than anything released in 1969, a ferocity that translates even better live than on record.
