Weekend Music Preview: Sera Cahoone, The New Year, & a double shot of Tia Carrera

Sera Cahoone’s musical career began in Colorado and gained momentum in Washington where she played drums for Carissa’s Wierd, a project that included future Band of Horses members Ben Bridwell and Mat Brooke. Cahoone also contributed to Band of Horses recordings in the past but stepped out on her own in 2005 with her self-titled debut full-length. Only As The Day Is Long followed this year on Sub Pop Records chock-full of dainty ditties that effortlessly combine Cahoone’s beautiful voice and poignant lyricism with soft folk guitar and strains of the pedal steel. Add to that occasional garnishes of harmonica and banjo, among other instruments, and the soothing soundscapes created seem fit for evening introspection and afternoon malaise alike. If the days have been long and the nights have been troublesome, reinvigorate and replenish with Cahoone’s compositions this evening at Emo’s Lounge. Silver Jews outside and Boxcar Satan inside ensure that the rest of Emo’s stays busy on Friday as well.

“Improvisation Across Continents: North Indian Music and Dance meet Flamenco” (presented by Sangeet Millennium) should make for extremely intriguing evening at Dougherty Arts Center on Friday. A number of musicians will be on hand to generate a live soundtrack (from Indian classical music instruments like the sitar and tabla, along with the flute and flamenco guitar) to complement a Kathak dance by Shila Mehta and a Flamenco dance Elisa Rodriguez.

Or just stick around Red River St. and catch talented New Jersey rockers The Parlor Mob live at Stubb’s (inside) on us! Enter below for a chance to win tickets to the show.

The Mohawk hosts an IMC (Integrated Media Community) event, the second in the series, entitled ATX Converge. Per the flyer (included in the trusty Austinist Weekend Music Preview Slideshow further below), “The ATX Converge initiative is a community oriented event series geared toward creating a more cohesive local arts community.” The promise of live music from the likes of White Denim, Belaire, Black Joe Lewis, Freshmillions, and Trey Brown should be all the motivation you need to attend this bash! (RSVP here.)

Lady Tight Rope brings us “A British Invasion Dance Party!” (at Beauty Bar on Friday) featuring fashion and comedy from across the pond, Go-Go Dancers (of course), and melodies courtesy of Dans La Lune and The Ugly Beats. The Golden Boys and Faceless Werewolves at Hole in the Wall is another alternative for a night of stellar rock ‘n’ roll, while Tia Carrera readies the audience at Room 710 for The Drunks’ CD Release show (late) with an early, free set at 8 p.m. (Tia Carrera rocks out Room 710 on Saturday as well.)

The New Year at Emo’s (outside) leads the list of quality shows in town on Saturday. Spearheaded by the Kadane brothers, the Texas act recently dropped its (self-titled) third record, four years after The End Is Near. Read our review of the new album here and our interview with Matt Kadane here. The New Year started a 41 date tour yesterday in Dallas and will head to Europe by November for concerts in a number of countries including the U.K. and Germany.

Momo’s is home to Texas NORML’s “Third Annual Sixth Street Smokeout & Global Marijuana Music Awards” on Saturday. Sean Reefer and the Resin Valley Boys and Jet Baker are just two of the contenders scheduled to perform live this evening. Make Austin NORML. A plethora of music on six stages will include performances by Tommy Tutone, The Eggmen, Suzanna Choffel, Aliens, The Boxing Lesson, {{{ SUNSET }}}, The Steps, Los Bad Apples, and Kristina Boswell.

Other options on Saturday include an acoustic set by Buttercup at Cactus Cafe, and Pinback outside and Transmography inside at The Mohawk, and Golden Arm Trio (interpretations of Duke Ellington’s catalog of work) at Lamberts, and Car Stereo (Wars) at Beauty Bar.

Finally, don’t forget about the Red River Beach Party on Sunday at The Mohawk and Club de Ville -- information on the sweet poster image above, to your right.
