Riverside Public Visioning Meeting

A "Public Visioning Meeting" to discuss the City of Austin's master plan for development in the East Riverside Corridor area will take place tonight at the Travis High School cafeteria. According to Phil Jones, who is representing the City of Austin Neighborhood Planning and Zoning Department, the meeting will allow residents to express their views on "issues such as affordable housing, aesthetics, condo development, transportation—you name it. This workshop will gather as much public input as [the city] can get, and then use it to shape the overall plan." Organizers of the meeting will present a "Visual Preference Survey," in which attendees rate and discuss images of the present state of E. Riverside Drive and renderings of how it might look in the future.

The East Riverside Corridor Area stretches along Riverside Drive between I-35 and Ben White Blvd., and due to its high number of pedestrian accidents, mix of shopping centers and high- and low-income apartments, new condos, and plentiful automobile and bicycle traffic, it's an area in desperate need of some tender loving planning. The meeting is scheduled for tonight, Wednesday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the cafeteria of
Travis High School, at 1211 E. Oltorf St. An earlier attempt to hold the meeting was postponed due to Hurricane Ike.

Key here is that the streetcar/light-rail-plan from CAMPO's TWG being pushed by Wynn/McCracken will be running on East Riverside, and could support a major increase in density without causing a lot more automobile traffic (train will have its own lane, unless ROMA backpedals to shared-lane streetcar).
