And no, just like the name of the Venue, the poster's graphic reference won't be changing any time soon.

Uhh...as the creator of the poster, let me state that it was never meant to offend and I'm sorry if it did.

The headress was never meant to play on "Indie" as stated above. I'd actually never thought of that. It was used because the venue (Mohawk) has stated from it's beginning that it uses Native American culture as an inspiration for how they operate. You can read more about it here: http://mohawkaustin.com/about/ (go to the very bottom for the "inspiration" section)

Again, sorry if it offends you - but all that was intended was to mesh karaoke (mic) and the Mohawk venue.

That’s called satire—not white privilege.

I wasn’t trying to belittle legitimate attacks made against potentially offensive racial stereotypes. I was trying to point out that this didn’t seem like the right battleground to stage that fight.

What is offensive about the poster, exactly? Is it implying that Native Americans are all a bunch of ‘50s-era microphones? All it did was attempt to connote ‘Indie-‘ by using an easily recognizable piece of Indian culture. Maybe if the poster depicted Davey Crockett with a microphone in one hand and a severed Cherokee head in the other you might have a point. As is, however, it seems pretty harmless to me.

Racism is everywhere when you wear race-colored glasses.

I'm not native American, but I find the use of a warbonnet in that graphic pretty offensive. Isn't there another icon Austinist could use to represent "indie" than a caricature of an ethnic/racial group?
