Austinist Indieroke: Thursday, Sept 18 @ The Mohawk

Austinist Indieroke
Thursday, Sept. 18
The Mohawk (912 Red River)
9 p.m., free - Prizes!
[info]
Slick that hair back, button up those trousers, stretch out those vocal chords, strap on them dancin’ shoes and get ready to have the time of your lives… again. Well, maybe the time of your month. Indieroke gives you a chance to make a complete fool out of yourself in front of all your friends (as well as complete strangers) while showing your knowledge of the indie hits of today and yesteryear.

Flip through the ever-widening tome of songs to find that eleven-minute Meatloaf jam, that Snow song that no one knows the words to, some Radiohead, Modest Mouse or just shut your eyes tight and let your finger and the chips land where they may. You could also join the increasing number of people to sing an Arcade Fire song. Seriously, at least two people sing that every time.

There’s a vast selection of indie tunes, hit songs and “Oh my god!” songs you forgot you loved. Grab a guy or gal and sing a duet to “Summer Nights” off the Grease soundtrack or get in a great harmony by way of Fleetwood Mac. And, the Journey possibilities are endless.

As if you required any more coaxing to come out Thursday, now there are more prizes. And, who doesn’t like prizes? Winners in the categories of “Best Female Performance,” “Best Male Performance” and “Best Duet or Group Performance” will be awarded brand spanking new Austinist Inideroke t-shirts along with two tickets to a show at the Mohawk. Plus, they get their picture up on Austinist the very next day to prove that the sins they committed against nature and the general public within shouting distance on Red River were in fact not hallucinations at all.

It’s free. It’s fun. It’s at the Mohawk. It starts at 9 p.m.

And no, just like the name of the Venue, the poster's graphic reference won't be changing any time soon.

Uhh...as the creator of the poster, let me state that it was never meant to offend and I'm sorry if it did.

The headress was never meant to play on "Indie" as stated above. I'd actually never thought of that. It was used because the venue (Mohawk) has stated from it's beginning that it uses Native American culture as an inspiration for how they operate. You can read more about it here: http://mohawkaustin.com/about/ (go to the very bottom for the "inspiration" section)

Again, sorry if it offends you - but all that was intended was to mesh karaoke (mic) and the Mohawk venue.

    That’s called satire—not white privilege.

I wasn’t trying to belittle legitimate attacks made against potentially offensive racial stereotypes. I was trying to point out that this didn’t seem like the right battleground to stage that fight.

What is offensive about the poster, exactly? Is it implying that Native Americans are all a bunch of ‘50s-era microphones? All it did was attempt to connote ‘Indie-‘ by using an easily recognizable piece of Indian culture. Maybe if the poster depicted Davey Crockett with a microphone in one hand and a severed Cherokee head in the other you might have a point. As is, however, it seems pretty harmless to me.

Racism is everywhere when you wear race-colored glasses.

White privilege allows you to think that's funny, asos.

I'm white, and I find the white background offensive.

I'm not native American, but I find the use of a warbonnet in that graphic pretty offensive. Isn't there another icon Austinist could use to represent "indie" than a caricature of an ethnic/racial group?
