Le Diamant Brut: Horse Feathers & HMS Foolhardy

HMS FOOLHARDY

What’s the Deal: This Austin trio has a very '90s feel, but in a good way. They have an indie pop sound that touches down in some familiar territory. The vast majority of songs are plump with rich, affective hooks. Their newer songs are produced by Louie Lino who works with Nada Surf and Matt Pond PA among others, and that influence really shows.

One of their tracks, “Overseas”, isn’t too far removed from something off Sunny Day Real Estate’s Diary. Soft-spoken choruses about relationships and constellations mingle with guitar strums and keyboard produced melodic electronics. “Taken Alive” is another song that brings to mind those early, melodic days with songs full of feeling of the 90s emo revival (before it was tainted by all those bands who wore that genre designation like a badge). Slow and somber guitar sparkles with piano and a steady rhythm section support the sweetly sullen harmonies.

Something Interesting: The group began in Berlin in 2003, but came to Austin in 2006.

HORSE FEATHERS

What’s the Deal: The name has been buzzing around bloggers recently partly because the band has an album House With No Home coming out September 9th and partly because the music they make is serene and dusty and gorgeous. The band lineup oscillates between 3 and 5 members, all adding either guitar, cello, violin, banjo or percussion into the mix. They have a rootsy, folky sound that really goes along great as a soundtrack to a desert drive, a rainy afternoon or anything you can do with a very thoughtful look on your face. It wouldn’t go well with a bar brawl (maybe the aftermath) or a high-speed chase. It would, however, fit perfectly with the moment of introspection after the crash from the high-speed chase.

“Curs in the Weeds” off the upcoming is full of whispery, thoughtful vocals and an acoustic guitar that strums along with the thickening whine and hum of a violin and cello that make the whole thing pretty epic. The swaying of the strings back and forth being plucked and bowed on “Finch on Saturday” from 2006’s Words Are Dead dance around in a way not unlike Owen Pallett among thick layers of chorus.

Something Interesting: The lead vocalist/guitarist Justin Ringle kind of looks like Will Oldham.
