Music News & Notes: Hadrosaurus, Okkervil, Redman & More
- As you might already know, Zilker Park's Dinoland opened last weekend. What you might not have known is that Ghostland Observatory is a "Hadrosaurus Sponsor," meaning they contributed at least $10,000 to the exhibit. Go Ghostland!
- RSVP at Austin Surreal for a chance to see Redman in Houston and Austin for free.
- Roxwel has a contest offering two VIP tickets to ACL. Enter to win here.
- The Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) is searching for nominations for the positions of 2009 and 2010 State Poet Laureate, State Musician, State Two-dimensional Artist and State Three-dimensional Artist. Any Texas citizen may make up to three nominations per artist category; however, self-nominations will not be accepted. Deadline for Texas State Artists nominations is October 5, 2008.
- Okkervil River has asked some of their favorite artists to cover songs from their upcoming album, The Stand-ins, and post them on their YouTube channel. Right now, you can see Austin's Zykos covering (not shockingly) "On Tour With Zykos".
- Watch a live performance from Shearwater performing live on AOL's Interface.
- September 14, 2008 marks the beginning of Open Spaces, a new monthly music series presented by Church of the Friendly Ghost at Salvage Vanguard, curated by local experimental music fixture and Weird Weeds member, Nick Hennies. The first installment will feature Nick Hennies performing solo on Jürg Frey's, "Resges," a 30 minute piece composed in 1996 for traditional and found percussion instruments and speech. The second half of the program presents the premiere of "Herbert," Hennies' new vibraphone solo dedicated to (and titled after) his one time teacher and mentor, Herbert Brün.
- Pink Nasty, aka Sara Beck, has a new song on her MySpace called "Maui."
