ACL Stage Preview: WaMu’s Sunday Lineup with Shooter Jenings, Xavier Rudd and more

Welcome to our ACL Stage Preview posts, where we give you a taste and idea of what to expect and what to look for when you attend Austin City Limits this year from September 26th to the 28th. First up, we have the WaMU stage on Sunday. Starting at 11:30 on this stage will kick off a day of music with some gospel followed by sets of country, funk, and eclectic Americana.

The River City Christianettes are a gospel quartet from San Antonio, featuring the big, harmonic female vocals with smooth, danceable hip-hop grooves thrown into the mix. The band has two albums out already, and the latest is a self-titled, 2007 release.

Nakia and his Southern Cousins are a southern-fried, soulful local group who has etched out a frequent gig at Momo’s on Thursday evenings when they’re in town. Often backed-up by the vocal group The Fresh Up Girls, the band have a busy schedule planned post-ACL as well, including a spot at the Final Celebration at the Backyard on October the 26th.

Young buck Mike Farris has found his way from rock and roll – fronting the Screamin’Cheetah Wheelies, playing with Double Trouble – back to rock’s roots the band leader of an Americana-gospel band. Farris’ voice is powerful enough to lead an orchestra, and he and The Roseland Rhythm Revue just released their sophomore album entitled Salvation in Lights.

Xavier Rudd is a super-hippy who should attract the jam-band and granola-snacking mom crowd. The multi-instrumentalist Aussie plays banjo, lap steel, harmonica, clarinet, and didgeridoo, and lives the lifestyle of a shoeless vegetarian when he isn’t performing or recording. Rudd is a festival veteran and also performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this year.

Best known as the son of country superstars Jessi Colter and Waylon Jennings, Shooter Jennings last year released his third studio album, The Wolf. Jennings peppers his music with references to his famous family, southern-fried guitar rock and oddball country rap. A Kid Rock duet is surely looming in the near future.

Galactic is a five-piece funk band from New Orleans, and their sixth and latest album is entitled From the Corner to the Block. It features guest spots from members of The Coup, Jurasic 5, Digable Planets and more.

Nakia and his Southern Cousins are so much fun. I highly recommend seeing them if you can. Nakia is a great singer, and a lot of fun to watch.
