Bush to Stop in Austin for Gustav Prep
As Gustav looks like it is on its way to New Orleans, President Bush and V.P. Cheney announced today that they will not be attending the GOP convention in St. Paul this week. They think it would look bad to visit a political function while a category 3 hurricane heads toward the Gulf states.
So instead of making an appearance in Minnesota, Bush plans to check on emergency preparations in Austin and San Antonio when the storm is set to hit Louisiana, then will make his way to the other states affected after the storm hits.
It may be that Bush will make an appearance to the convention via satellite. As of this time, plans for the GOP convention seem to be in flux, with McCain saying that a celebration wouldn't be prudent at this time. A press conference is being held later this afternoon to discuss changes to the convention plans.
update: McCain has suspended most of the first day's activities at the Republican convention in response to Gustav.
