Music Preview and Giveaway: Electric Touch and The Steps @ Stubb's

Austin's Electric Touch are something of an overnight sensation. They turned up on the local scene in late 2007, the product of former IV Thieves member Shane Lawlor (who moved here from Nottingham, England with his ex-band) and former Bojones members Christopher and Louis Messina. After playing a few gigs, the band quickly landed a record deal with Houston's Justice label along with gigs at SXSW, Lollapalooza, and ACL Fest. The band will also be touring for a month with Scotland's The Fratellis this fall.

Tonight's show at Stubb's indoor stage celebrates the release of the band's self-titled debut. The songs evoke everything from Bowie to Supertramp, The Beatles and Jet. There's even a bit of sensitive Britpop for good measure. At a mere 31 minutes, the disc is slick, well-produced, unapologetically referential to the band's record collection, and (thanks to Lawlor's accented vocals) sounds like it came from somewhere far away from Texas.

Opening tonight's show are The Steps, who we recently described on this site as having "undeniable appeal" and "songs...dying to be bar room singalongs." Were we the betting type, it's a good wager that one if not both of these bands will be hailed as a next big thing in the coming months, so now is your chance to catch them for eight bucks right in your own backyard. Don't say we didn't warn you.
