What’s the Deal: They’re having their CD release party for their new album, Quality of Life, at Emo’s on Thursday night with The Little Gentlemen, Go Action Team and Sad Like Crazy in the lounge. Many of the songs on the new album are as ‘zesty’ as their name implies, with plenty of catchy indie pop that’s full of shimmering and crisp musicianship as well as bright and emotionally rich vocals. Hooky guitars and handsome chorus lines help make this album a welcomed cavity.
Well into the album yields “I’ll Do the Thinking,” which is an unusually sugary rock tune that can even bring to mind groups like the Dandy Warhols circa “Heroin is so Passe,” maybe with a little more guitar and less chorus. “The Rejects” is a snappy number, you know, the kind you listen to at the show and just tap your foot and bob your head. It begins with acoustic guitar and ends with a bunch of “la la las”.
Something Interesting: The cover art on the new disc lives up to the band’s name. It looks cool and refreshing, and the photo of a beer-drinking man being splashed with invigorating water recalls early images of water parks.
Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: “You Were Dead” and “Himself to Himself Alone”
What’s the Deal: They’re a Goner Records band, Jay Reatard is listed as an occasional live player, and they appreciate photographs of grown men in assless chaps with a leather crotch-purse at maximum capacity. They also describe their music as “mustache folk music for disco scumbags.” This Arizona group, which is really just Shawn Foree and various live players, is big on the fuzzy, fun electro-punk with nearly all songs danceable, gritty and not taking themselves too seriously.
The electronic buzz and hum on “Simulator” off this year’s Sorcerer is full of relentless drive and almost robotic, apathetic vocals. “Hologram," one of the more dramatic songs from the album, starts off with a simple yet enticing guitar riff that gets its hooks in your gut rather quickly. The track builds with repetitive vocals shouting “I am a hologram” into a dissonant screech which eventually fades away into more chorus and guitar. They struck all the right chords with this one.
Something Interesting: Tucson, AZ has its own version of the Grammy, the Tammy, and Digital Leather was nominated for it this year.
Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: “Dance Till Dead” and “The Assault”
