The Race is On, Humans: The Nike+ Human Race 10k

[info]
Runners from around the globe can participate in the race by hooking up to the Nike network via a Nike+SportBand or Nike+iPod, but we don’t need to worry about that virtual community stuff. Austin has been selected as one of the 25 cities that will receive a full-fledged 10K setup, with a course that begins and ends at 6th and Congress.
Running 6.2 miles during the month of August probably sounds more palatable to the Londoners and Vancouverites who’ll be taking part, but there’s no doubt that, come August 31, Congress will be crammed with fit-crazy Austinites prepared to accept Nike’s worldwide challenge to race against the world.
Those who need a push to the starting line even have time to shape up a little before the big day. Four official Nike Club Runs remain, so head to Six Lounge on Thursday (that's tonight), Starbucks on Saturday or Guero’s on Tuesday if you need a kick in the pants (along with some free refreshments and maybe a little music).
Still not ready to Just Do It? Consider these perks; registrants receive the typical race rewards (t-shirts, replenishing electrolytes) and will also have the chance to catch sight of a few fitness celebs. Cynthia Cooper of WNBA fame and Olympic gold medalists/former Longhorn swimmers Brendan Hansen and Aaron Peirsol will be in attendance. Lance Armstrong will be running as well (does that dude ever take a break?), and the grand finale of the evening consists of a concert by Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals, free to participants.
It’s gonna be hot and it’s gonna be tough, but this mega-10K might just be worth it. The Olympics will be over by then so you’ll surely be in need of a fix; a globally-shared runner’s high should do the trick.
