Mark Your Calendars: August 23 Is "National Go Topless Protest Day"

Though it doesn’t seem very rebellious to choose a location where Austinites already have the right to get in touch with themselves go topless, we think we should rally together to create an even greater presence and join in the Tata-stravaganza! (But please, no cameras.) According to their website:
On Aug 23rd, 2008, topless women will rally in great numbers across the USA to protest this gross inequality in the law and will demand that they be granted the fundamental right to be topless where men already enjoy that right according to the 14th amendment of the Constitution.

If the 14th Amendment says so, it is not a crime! The fems in this town should be able to relieve themselves of this pyretic summer just like the dudes - TOPLESS - showing off their Betty & Veronicas in all their maidenly glory. If we want to jog around Lady Bird Lake sans sports bra, it is our Constitutional right! Have you seen what has been happening in New York? (NSFW, y’all!)

So let us all come together in support of the knockers on Noon this Saturday at Hippie Hollow Park and show Austin what your mama gave ya! May there never be another Janet Jackson Nipplegate again.

Disclaimer: if for some reason, APD wants to hate, please don’t call us to bail you out of jail. We can’t afford to save you all.

No worries about APD deciding to hate: it's already perfectly legal for women to go topless in public in Austin, Texas.

Jogging town lake without a bra makes my dirty pillows hurt.

holding a topless protest at HH is like staging a sit in at the furniture store.

It pains me to think there are probably guys actually wanting this to happen. Can you imagine the visual scars we'd be subjected to if this were to become a norm. Trust me, girls who want to show and have tits that people want to see are already flashing in public on a selective basis. Last thing we need is women with tits down to their waist walking around downtown...oh wait, we already have Cedar Street, my bad.

Seriously, who is advocating hippie hollow as a location for this event?!? The author of this article? There's no link to any sort of local organization.

As everyone else here has mentioned, it's perfectly legal for men and women to walk down Congress Avenue bare-chested. No need to ride bikes all the way out to Hippie Hollow. And there's no fucking way APD would hassle topless women out there.

As the clueless tone of this article demonstrates, there is a lack of awareness in Austin that women are free to bare their boobs in public. So perhaps a public event like this will help spread awareness.
