New Release Tuesday: Jim O'Rourke & Lindstrom

Stereolab's Chemical Chords is also out today; and you can read our review here, in the event that you missed our listening party last weekend at Beauty Bar. Stay tuned for reviews of GZA's latest, Pro Tools very soon.

Lindstrøm Where You Go I Go Too (Feedelity)

Lindstrøm has released tons EPs and mixes, but Where You Go is his first proper full-length by most standards. It's a long, sprawling piece of electronic excellence, and is probably one of the best electronic / instrumental albums of the year. It's just three tracks, and just under one hour in length. These are meditative, carefully managed pieces of music; not satisfied to be merely electronica, experimental or dub. The opening track doesn't reveal itself quickly -- you have to listen for almost eight minutes to hear a kick drum -- but the waves of samples, synths and cymbals make the build-up an epic one. Much like Studio's Yearbook, Where You Go pays homage both to the influence new wave and experimental minds of the past (Manuel Göttsching, Glen Branca and Neu! come to mind) but also gives serious props to the future as more layers of sound appear in the songs. This is a highly recommended listen, especially in headphones.

Jim O'Rourke Long Night (Drag City)

Jim O'Rourke doesn't need an introduction in most music aficionado circles. He's been playing and producing some of the best avant and experimental music for over 20 years. If for some reason you aren't aware of him, you might perk up when we tell you that he recently mixed Joanna Newsom's Ys album, and was part of Gastr Del Sol with David Grubbs, did a stint in Sonic Youth and has worked with Jeff Tweedy on a number of projects (including Yankee Hotel Foxtrot), including their collaborative project, Loose Fur. But don't let that intimidate you: what you're about to hear upon purchasing the Long Night double disc is nothing like any of the above. Composed in 1990 after O'Rourke graduated from music school, this huge piece of music is an exercise in monitored stillness. It's a dense, calculating drone epic, and highly regarded as one of the best in the genre -- a real gem from the early part of O'Rourke's career that sends a very academic message. Layers, signals, tones and movement are all incredibly precise, and the attention to detail requires patience on the listener's part, but it's time well spent. O'Rourke is a champion, and we're all here to learn.
