Fans of jazz and improvisational music will not want to miss a performance and album release event courtesy of flutist and reeds player Alex Coke, his associates at The Creative Opportunity Orchestra, and of course The Church of the Friendly Ghost.
Along fellow Creative Opportunity Orchestra member Tina Marsh, Coke was a notable presence within the Austin jazz scene in the early 90s, playing with a number of groups including New Texas Swing, the Carl Smith Tentet, and The Worthy Constituents. Coke moved to Amsterdam but returned just short of a decade ago, and has continued to work with Marsh weekly. His new record, It’s Possible, will be released on the VoxLox label and also features percussionist Jefferson Voorhees, Steve Feld on the Ashiwa Brass box, and Marsh on vocals and “toys” while Coke performs on the flute, tenor sax, and more.
Not ensconced in any one jazz sound, Coke mixes more traditional hard bop elements with electronics and the experimental to bring something to the table for the more traditional fan or those who crave the stranger side. Ararat will have food available for purchase, and the event is BYOB.
