It's a rare and wonderful thing when mummy movies and fine art come together seamlessly. This Friday, the Mexic-Arte Museum and KOOP Radio are putting on just such an anomalous event. In support of the current Aztec and Maya Revival exhibit, the museum is hosting a movie screening featuring the 1957 film La Momia Azteca (Attack of the Aztec Mummy), which features such b-movie standards as hypnosis, cursed mummies, hidden treasure, and reincarnated Aztec maidens.

The Aztec and Maya Revival exhibition, on view through September 16th, offers a wonderful overview of not only Mexican revival art, but also the Pre-Columbian pieces that inspired the style. Cultural artifacts from Pre-Columbian ancestral groups are featured alongside turn-of-the-century art that uses similar motifs. Particularly striking are the intricately carved wood furniture pieces, including an upright piano that was commissioned for the 1900 World's Fair in Paris, and a small recreation of San Antonio's historic Aztec Theater that has been set up in the museum's back gallery. Focusing on the theater's groundbreaking use of Aztec Revival architecture, the exhibit also features a small viewing room that shows classic 1950's Mexican horror films from the Aztec Mummy Collection.

Although La Momia Azteca is one of the films regularly showing through out the duration of the exhibit, Friday night promises tasty pre-movie reception treats from Oaxacan Tamaleo, Saint Arnold Brewery, Barefoot Wines, and Pixie Mate. Admission to the film night is free for museum members and $6 for the general public. The pre-movie reception begins at 7pm, with the movie commencing at 8pm.

Aztec and Maya Revival runs through September 16th.
