Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Wild Sweet Orange @ Stubb's & more
Kick off your weekend nice and early on Friday with The Dedringers’ live set in-store at Waterloo Records at 5 p.m. The band is offering downloads off their latest album Sweetheart of the Neighborhood for free here (for a limited time only), or you can obtain a coupon that allows you to purchase the album for $7.99 when you attend their performance at Waterloo Records this evening. The Dedringers then take their sprawling Americana tunes further east on 6th St. to Momo’s for a nightcap. Lamberts is a strong alternative on Friday evening, serving up tasty BBQ in addition to hosting the soothing soundscapes of the perennially underrated Friends of Dean Martinez and the alt-country stylings of Brothers and Sisters. (Read our recent interview with Brother Will here.)

Hopefully you’ve been getting your Friday evening caffeine fix at Progress Coffee’s ongoing residency series. (Frank Smith headlines for the remainder of August.) On Saturday, Cafe Caffeine and Clementine Coffee Bar offer up live music as well. Cafe Caffeine hosts Renee Robin Riddle’s full-length album release party, with a live set by Impetous Boy (a.k.a Carter Pagel) preceding Riddle’s performance; the show starts at 6:30 p.m. Clementine Coffee Bar presents the family of musicians that is Canopy at 9 p.m.
Hanging in the West 6th St. area? Head over to Momo’s to catch Vinyl Dharma; the local band was recently featured on MTV2’s Bands On The Rise series.
Scoot Inn has put together quite a line-up for an all day event on Saturday -- Tia Carrera, All In The Golden Afternoon, The Strange Attractors, and The Tunnels, to name a few, are all scheduled to perform at the River City High Festival: Class of ‘08. Festivities begin at 2 p.m with Tia Carrera headlining at 11 p.m.
Finally, The Mohawk’s dual stage, two-pronged assault on our yearning ears cannot be ignored on Saturday evening. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Chairlift, and Pataphysics take over the outside stage at the much lauded local bar; A Faulty Chromosome follow immediately after on the inside stage. Chairlift formed in Colorado but now call New York home; the trio’s debut full-length Does You Inspire You (on Kanine Records) is already out digitally but is expected to hit streets in physical form in October. Caroline Polachek’s hypnotic voice syncs in perfectly with the band’s light electro backdrops leading to a mesmerizing listening experience. Don’t miss it! A Faulty Chromosome close out The Mohawk experience on Saturday with samplings from their As An Ex-Anorexic's Six Sicks Exit,… record, inside at 1 a.m.
