The Festival, happening sometime in November (dates still TBD, according to the website), has a not too unusual goal: “to provide a venue for films that might not otherwise be exhibited for the public.” What does set the AUFF apart is its openness to films that push the envelope—a LOT. They encourage the crazy, dipping deeply into the Roget’s Thesaurus:
Films of a radical, critical, progressive, provocative, confrontational, controversial, subversive, seditious, irreverent, illicit, offensive, obscene, rebellious, profane, pornographic, conspiratorial, corruptive, psychotropic, phantasmagoric, volatile, violent, anarchic, blasphemous or otherwise irresponsible nature are especially encouraged.
Clearly the rules on content are pretty lax, but they do have a few demands: maximum length of 40 minutes, it must be in English, and most importantly of all, it must be submitted by September 30. Prizes are based on an audience vote, and multiple submissions are allowed, so why not make a film for each adjective listed above? You can’t lose if every film in the festival is yours.
