Music Notes: the Golden Hornet Project, Bun B, David Byrne & More

  • David Byrne is kicking off the "David Byrne, Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno" tour in early September, and he's scheduled to do a show at the Paramount here in Austin on Sept. 25th in addition to his headlining performance at the ACL Fest. As of now, you can sample his new record, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today on on his Web site. No word on ticket sales for the Paramount show yet, but we'll keep you posted.
  • Language Room fans rejoice: their new handmade EP is available at shows (next gig is Sept. 13 @ Red Eyed Fly), and they're heading into the studio soon to start work on a full-length, to be produced by Blue October's Matt Novesky.
  • Get to know a non-profit: The Golden Hornet Project aims to bridge the gap between Austin's new classical movement and the nightclub scene by organizing various performances year 'round. Since 1999, the group has presented over 100 performances, including some by Graham Reynolds, a board member and local musician/composer best known for his work with Golden Arm Trio. Stay tuned to Austinist for more details on the group's celebration of 501c3 status: a celebration is planned for August 16 at the Salvage Vanguard Theater.
  • In case you weren't aware, the third Monday of each month is the "Big Meeting" day for The Year of Austin Music / Save Austin Music. This month it's on August 18, at TYOAM headquarters. If you can't make it to the meeting, you might want to volunteer to work the Save Austin Music booth at the Austin Ice Cream Festival on August 9 at Waterloo Park.
  • NPR Is streaming live performances from the Newport Folk Festival, including sets from Calexico, Jim James, Steve Earle and Brandi Carlile.
  • Get ready for a couple truly awesome hip hop shows in August: Scarface at Spiro's on August 8 (tickets) and Houston by way of Port Arthur rapper (and UGK member) Bun B at the Parish on August 22 (R.S.V.P.).
  • Mark your calendars: on August 30 The Black & White Years will play at Stubb's. Enter at the show for a chance to win (the now sold out) three day passes to ACL Festival in September.

Thanks for the heads up on the NPR taping of Jim James @ Newport.
Even the newer material and more "eccentric" songs sound great stripped down.

I'm SO fucking excited for the Bryne tour. Besides the Eno/Bryne album "Life in the Bush of Ghosts," which is awesome, and their upcoming one, which is probably going to be awesome, the Eno-produced Heads albums are definitely my favorite. If Bryne still has half the showmanship from "Stop Making Sense," these shows are going to be incredible.
