Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Brazos @ Progress Coffee & The Hot Pentecostals @ Emo's

If you’re not driving to The Backyard to see Snoop Dogg live in concert twice this weekend, fear not, because you have plenty of alternatives to choose from on both Saturday and Sunday. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

On Friday, start off your evening with Progress Coffee’s Residency, which is fast gaining momentum. Brazos continue as headliners this Friday with Alex Dupree getting things started at 9 p.m. All for a measly $3. Brazos’ two EPs (Feeding Frenzy and A City Just As Tall) firmly placed the band on our radar as one to watch, and the possibility of hearing new material off their upcoming full-length on Autobus should be enticing enough for you to head over to Progress Coffee to jump start your weekend. Check out Progress’ menu here.

Live rock ‘n’ roll from The Sixty Sevens, along with additional entertainment courtesy of ladies from the Carousel Cabaret and The Jigglewatts Burlesque squads, is another option on Friday evening -- Red 7 hosts the inevitable shenanigans. Free Hoeks Pizza not included. If you’d rather dance the night away to New Wave and Brit-Pop tunes, make your way to Elysium where DJ Billion Dollar Bill and DJ None pilot the beats at the PDA Austin event.

The Monarch Event Center continues to reign over north-central Austin with another quality show this weekend -- Zookeeper, {{{ SUNSET }}}, Loxsly, and Frank Smith are just a few of the acts that comprise the Tangled Snark ProductionsSummer Party line-up this Friday at the venue. Choices down south include Li’l Cap’n Travis and Pink Nasty at the Continental Club and Adam Carroll at Saxon Pub.

Follow the jump for information on many more shows in town this weekend, and the Austinist Weekend Music Preview Slideshow.

The Hot Pentecostals, besides cooking up brilliant country fried rock tunes for you to feast on, also offer some advice on their Virb.com page -- “The Hot Pentecostals really mean it because the music is covered in the blood of Christ and washed down with a Valium and a couple of well whiskeys. If you know what I'm talking about then you just found your new favorite band. If you don't have a clue, go to your mom's house, sneak a peek in her medicine cabinet when no one's around, steal her Valium (I promise, it's there) take one or two, drink a couple of whiskeys, put on a Hot P's album and you will have discovered an earthly paradise.” Alright then! Procure their albums at the show on Saturday when the Austin act headlines Emo’s Lounge; The Catfish Hunters and Alexander’s Dark Band open.

Club de Ville hosts the undeniable talent of Graham Reynolds on Saturday when Golden Arm Trio presents interpretations of Duke Ellington’s catalog of work. Reynolds is truly one of Austin’s legendary musicians -- he has released some stellar albums under the Golden Arm Trio moniker, worked with fellow local composer Peter Stopschinski (Golden Hornet Project), and furnished the soundtrack to Richard Linklater’s 2006 movie, A Scanner Darkly. A versatile Jack-Of-All-Trades, Reynolds’ various projects have performed live at venues ranging from Room 710 to the Armstrong Community Music School, and from Emo’s to Cactus Cafe. Reynolds also continues to provide live scores for certain films playing at the Alamo Drafthouse.

The Secret Machines and Ian Orth at Stubb’s (Inside) and The Flametrick Subs and Spoiled Royals at Beerland are solid bets for a great night out on town, while there are a couple of tribute shows on Saturday evening worth noting as well. Drifter (Iron Maiden) and Big Balls (AC/DC) at Room 710, and Forever Changes (a tribute to Love’s third record) at Lamberts, offer up trips down memory lanes. Also on Saturday, Canadian duo The Pack A.D. bring crunching blues-rock ditties off their Tintype album (and hopefully, previews off their upcoming Funeral Mixtape record due on August 12th) to The Hole in the Wall.

On Sunday, you may be living it up at The Backyard, but if not, we highly recommend the Jay Reatard show (late) at Red 7; War Hungry, Let Down, Downpresser, and Coptic Times play early sets at the same venue. If sticking around UT Campus tickles your fancy, head over to The Hole in the Wall to catch live music from Boxcar Serenade and Beth Lee, among others.

Lastly, the Austinist Weekend Music Preview wants to ensure that you also have information on weekend festivals coming up in other cities in the state of Tejas. The Rock The Bayou Festival line-up speaks for itself! The fest is scheduled to take place at the Rock The Bayou Grounds in Houston from August 29th till September 1st. (Tickets.)

The 2nd annual South Padre International Music Festival (October 31st to November 2nd) recently announced their roster for this year’s edition -- Willie Nelson, Blue Öyster Cult, Alejandro Escovedo, Ghostland Observatory, Grupo Fantasma, Foghat and Fastball are some of the artists that comprise the line-up. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster and three-day passes can be purchased for $70 (plus taxes and services fees) until August 24th. We’re guessing the price will increase after that date.
