Dear and the Headlights, What Laura Says, & Beaux Loy at Stubb's
Tuesday, July 29
Stubb's (801 Red River)

Warming up the crowd will be fellow desert-dwellers What Laura Says, an act who wisely trimmed their moniker to its present length from the once-overdone What Laura Says Thinks and Feels. But that's not as important as the continued maturation of their sound, as they've made strides to refine their enjoyable and occasionally Beatlesesque leanings into something not merely interesting, but actually good. Their songs veer on the subtle side, with light vocal harmonizing and an absence of wall-of-noise techniques, and the remastering of their debut LP—which hits shelves in less than a month—acts as a fine display of the band's growth.
Playing the early slot will be Austin's Beaux Loy, the former member of Damesviolets who has struck out on his own as a solo artist. His melodramatic approach seems destined for a wider audience, and this may be a good chance to see him before the big guys at the major labels get their hands on him. Not only that, but his MySpace page is an adventure. Altogether, it should be a good night of pop rock at Stubb's, and it's one of those rare concerts where maybe, just maybe, the bands won't complain about the heat.
