The Public Library: More Than Just Free Air Conditioning!
A few related Austin Public Library notes of note-
According to a recent News8 article, the uses for the Public Library during times of dark-clouded economies (such as ours), are multitudinous. Instances of evidence: kids are kept busy in the children’s section, adults are kept busy searching for employment on the interweb terminals, and everyone else is kept busy waiting in the check-out check-out.A note on the Public Library's check-out check-out: if you are looking for a date/one-nighter with someone of reasonable intelligence who is at least making an attempt at having some degree of social conscience, the check-out line at just about any library would be a good place to look. Seriously. Not that you should go trolling the library for ass or anything (or should you?), but it’s got to be better than last-call or the free clinic in terms of good-mate location strategy.
So that’s pretty sweet.
More Library bits after the jump!
Sure, people are scared of the fuel monster and are staying in a bit more than average this Summer. But you know what? Austin Public Library doesn’t necessarily believe that you’re too broke to travel. If they’re right, then perhaps you’d be interested in an audiobook for the trip? Eh? We all know that rural radio is absolute crap, so why not listen to someone read a little Chuck Palahnuik to you instead? Perhaps a story about how several feet of instestine got sucked out of a young boy because he sat on the vacuum grate at the bottom of a neighborhood pool? That’ll learn them kids in the back seat to shut the hell up.
In another badass note, local Austin librarians, The Austin Public Library Bibliofiles are making waves in the quietly booming field of competitive librarianism. It’s like synchronized swimming, but with book carts. AND AUSTIN TOOK STATE THIS YEAR! Sure, the Well-Stacked Sci-Brarians from California took the national title, but so what? They Want To Be Your Librarian, They Want To Check Out Your Books. Sexy time.
