Austinist Show Preview: Calamity Magnet, Built By Snow + more @ Emo's Lounge

The sugary sweet pop harmonies of Calamity Magnet permeate Emo’s Lounge this Monday with support from local outfits Built By Snow, Hollywood Gossip, and Household Names. A former member of The Rentals and native Texan, Sara Radle heads up the L.A. based Calamity Magnet; the band released their first EP in March of this year. It’s worth noting that Radle was still a part of The Rentals up until last month when the allure of full time duties with Calamity Magnet dragged her away. You can stream an a capella version of The Rentals classic “Getting By” on her solo MySpace page -- she calls it her goodbye to the band but warns that it’s only a demo!

Although Calamity Magnet’s self-titled EP is already carving a niche for the band outside of Matt Sharp’s realm, Weezer references and reminders may run amok this evening with Built By Snow providing energetic synth-pop that reminds us of the Weez’ heyday of the '90s. (You can read our review of BBS’s Noise EP here.) The band is chuffed that Radle invited them on tour with Calamity Magnet and this show will be extra special as it is BBS singer / guitarist JP Pfertner’s birthday, and special stuff like “cake and stupid hats and things like that” can be expected as per fellow band mate Matt Murray. Built By Snow would also like to give fans a chance to win tickets to the show -- shoot them an email with “weird kids” (“All The Weird Kids Know”) in the subject line and you may just be going to the show for free. Two winners will be notified by the band itself.

The last time we saw Household Names live (to be honest, it was a few years ago), we do believe we enjoyed a Weezer cover during their set. The veteran band opens with its pop ditties with up-and-comers Hollywood Gossip following them on stage. Take it all in tonight at Emo’s Lounge!
