Aliens Just Don't Understand: Master Pancake's Independence Day

Master Pancake Theater Presents: Independence Day
Friday, July 11; Saturday, July 12
Alamo Drafthouse Downtown (320 E 6th Street)
7:30 and 10:30

Who loves Will Smith more than July Fourth filmgoers? That didn’t change this year, as Hancock’s 62 million dollar take proves. But remember what got this whole holiday box office bonanza thing going? Smith has been cranking out bankable Independence Day blockbusters since…well, since Independence Day (AKA ID4), 1996.

Some of us might remember lining up a day or two early to catch this mammoth blockbuster with that amazing shot of the Statue of Liberty being destroyed. Some of us might even remember they showed it around the clock in Dallas, causing some valuable sleep to be lost.

And then some of us might remember how much that movie actually sucked. Hostile aliens doing battle with the President in a fighter plane? Jeff Goldblum as some sort of genius scientist? A software virus that can cripple completely foreign intergalactic alien technology? Come on! This kind of big budget movie awful-ness (for which the Devlin-Emmerich creative duo has become so renowned) is exactly what makes this film perfect for the character assassins of the Master Pancake Theater. Catch the madness and ridicule this weekend at the Alamo Downtown.

It makes perfect sense that the Alamo’s genius programmers broke out this film last weekend in honor of our nation’s birth. But those of you who like fireworks and traffic (together at last!) might have missed it. That’s why they’re giving you one more weekend to check it out—hey, what could be better than two Will Smith movies in two weeks? But for this one, it’s all about the (unintended) laughs. And if anyone can make you laugh at the White House being incinerated and aliens taking over the earth, it’s the comedic minds of the MPT (talking over the movie the whole time so that there’s always something better than the actual movie going on).

If you love bad movies—or hate bad movies but love to make fun of them—this is definitely for you. Remember: Independence Day isn’t truly over until we acknowledge what our forefathers died for—the right to make fun of people. Isn’t that in the Bill of Rights somewhere?

Friday’s early show is sold out, but there are still three more screenings, so buy tickets now.
