Art should surprise you.

When local artist Sean Gaulager arrived at his newly-rented workspace on Allen Street, he didn’t expect to find the walls transformed into a floor-to-ceiling collage, or painted, as its creator Sarah Stevens described, both “gratuitously and without hesitation.”

Stevens' found textiles helped create “an intricate, layered, candy-like mess made of pages ripped from fashion magazines, glossy pink paint and tacky, bombastic fabrics in implied organic forms." The resulting installation marks the first showcase of Co-Lab, a new media project space that affords exciting opportunities for local artists.

Co-Lab’s collaborative foundation and continual rotation allows artists to expand beyond the traditional gallery model and exhibit their evolving work on a more frequent basis. Stevens’ epic collage, The Staypuft Harbinger, promises adventurous forms “ranging from quietly meditative to hyperactive and grossly indulgent”—a fitting introduction to a fearless and exciting creative space.

Co-Lab maintains an open and ongoing call for ideas/proposals regarding installation, performance, new media, public, and community based projects. You can email them for details.
