Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Tribella @ The Peacock & Gigan @ Room 710

As the beloved 4th of July weekend approaches, so does a mass quantity of live music to pick and choose from. Head to The Peacock on Thursday and check out local power-pop act Tribella. Comprised of former members of the Sarah Glynn Band and Echoset, the trio is working on their debut EP, due in August of this year. Although they currently only have two songs for our listening pleasure on their MySpace page, they do seem to harbor a witty sense of humor and a penchant for clever notes. “Within the decade, Tribella hopes to sell more singles than Elton John's "Candle in the Wind," and more albums than The Eagles' Their Greatest Hits (Vol. 1). They will concentrate their efforts on producing a video more disturbing than NIN's "Closer," with better dancing than Michael Jackson's "Thriller," and with more cleverly choreographed treadmill routines than OK Go's "Here It Goes Again."” Sweetness!

On Saturday, recover from all of Friday’s beer guzzling, burger eating, and hours in the sun with a dose of metal courtesy of Gigan. Eric Hersemann formed the band in 2006 after stints with Diabolic and Hate Eternal, and Gigan recently signed with Napalm Records. Technically adept, monstrously heavy, and brilliantly cacophonous, Gigan rocks our socks off even at our day job cubicles so we’re fairly certain they will tear down the bar built with lots of THC when they headline Room 710 Saturday night. Enter at your own risk! And if you’re wondering where the term “Gigan” comes from, read all about it on Wikipedia, where we discovered that “Gigan is a cybernetic monster sporting a buzzsaw weapon in its frontal abdominal region and large metallic hooks for hands.”

A few quick local notes, Austin’s own Whitman is in the running to win a record deal with Original Signal/Epic Records (among other things) via a contest sponsored by SPIN, Music Nation, and Hennessy. The Hot Pursuit began with almost 5,000 acts but is now down to 20, and Whitman needs your vote! Judges include Peter Morén, Amanda Palmer, and Michael Showalter -- read all about it here and vote for Whitman here. You can catch Whitman live at Stubb's (Inside) this Saturday. The king of Austin's Beauty Bar, Prince Klassen has shared his latest mix with us and it can be streamed here. Klassen embarks on a tour of California and Canada this week and will be M.I.A. at Beauty Bar until July 10th. In other news, Do512 is giving away a month's worth of free tickets to shows at a bunch of venues in town. Click here for details and a chance to win this treasure.
