Shut Up and Drive

Austin drivers are the worst in Texas, according to a new report from Allstate Insurance Co. Their recent analysis found that Austinites, on average, enjoy about 7.4 years between collisions, and are over 35% likelier than other Americans to get in an accident. El Paso and Fort Worth, on the other hand, were repeatedly among the top ten cities with the best drivers, when ranked according to gender and age. [Data]

Austin's average age is the youngest in Texas. Has the highest proportion of college students to general population of any large Texas city.

I"m sure the fact that we are the tech-savviest city and the best place for singles (aka drinking) doesn't help.

I learned to drive in El Paso, and it was always scary and jarring to visit Austin. Austin drivers seemed to me to be more aggresive and less accommodating. Now that I have lived in Austin a while I actually learned to hate to drive. I thought it was just me being too timid - many people complained of El Paso drivers being too slow, so I am satisfied that All State saw fit to qualify my previous habits as "good driving."

Just a note: the post says the study took age and gender into account.

Yet another good justification for public transportation. Get the dangerous idiots off the road so the rest of us can go on about our business.
