Last week saw The Church of the Friendly Ghost’s weekly residency at The Salvage Vanguard Theater flirting with more accessible, poppy sounds, but today their craziest inclinations are out in full force, with a dollop of drone and a side heaping of experimental jazz.
You may know Tom Carter from his work with the folksy Charalambides, or caught him performing with a wide range of musicians including Jandek, Thurston Moore, or under the name Badgerlore with Six Organ of Admittances’ Ben Chasny. Marcia Bassett you may not know at all, as this will be her first Texas performance and her various musical projects (GHQ, Hototogisu, Double Leopards) are even more under the radar than Carters’. But tonight Carter and Bassett are joining forces as Zaika -– a name under which the two have been performing their “long-form doses of agro psych drone and mellow cosmic drift” since 2003.
Also performing is the jazz trio ECFA (who we’ve profiled previously) and which consists of Carl Smith on sax, Derek Phelps on trumpet and Jason Baczynski. Joining ECFA in opening the show will be Lisa Cameron’s project Venison Whirled, which Church of the Friendly Ghost organizer Aaron Mace promises will include “lap steel, metal bowls, bow, cymbals, and Fender Twin Reverb.”

FYI, that's not a photo of Zaika. It's a photo of Vialka, the French duo who is playing at SVT on Friday night.
Ah! Fixed, thank you.
