Austinist Show Preview: Faun Fables at Mohawk

Just a month before the release of Faun Fables’ 4-song EP A table Forgotten, Dawn McCarthy and her troupe of minstrels will be bringing their theatrical art-folk Friday night to Mohawk. If the songs on the disc are any indication of what to expect, then there should be plenty of tribal, earthy folk songs played on everything from an autoharp to a flute to a broom. The songs and sounds within have a very ancient communal feeling as they are backed by chants and hand claps as much as they are more manufactured instruments. Some of the tracks border on the spooky and dance and puppet shows aren’t uncommon, so expect an experience a little more engaging than some other shows.

Supporting are locals The Invincible Czars with their experimental rock brought in by electric violin, saxophone, keyboards and everything else. Their music could go quite well as the score to a very bizarre or interesting indie flick or as the soundtrack to a night losing yourself in a labyrinth of sounds. Death is Not a Joyride will open things and set the tone with plenty of sometimes creepy, experimental violin-rock on the heels of their latest effort, Human Zoo. To investigate the band further, check out their Le Diamant Brut entry a few weeks back.
