Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Happy Anniversary Room 710 & Beerland!
On the 19th, the likes of World Burns To Death and The Roller equip Room 710 with layers of wall to wall heaviness, be it speeding hardcore or sludgy metal. On Friday, the bar built with lots of THC delivers a line-up that consists of legendary locals Pocket FishRmen whose cheeky lyricism and undeniable showmanship always makes for a genuine live spectacle of punk ‘n’ roll. We’re especially excited for another chance to witness “We’ve Got a Yin For Your Yang” in concert. Insect Sex Act, consisting of members of Ministry, Pong, and Scratch Acid, but apparently sans MySpace page, are a part of Saturday's bill as well, along with prunk, funk, and punk courtesy of Lick Lick, Downtown Brown, and Punkaroos. This will be Lick Lick’s last show in town before the band embarks on a tour of Japan in July in support of their self-titled full length (released last year on local label Australian Cattle God Records).
Room 710 has occasionally been unfairly pigeonholed as a hard rock / metal venue when they have actually revealed an impartial ear over the years, booking acts ranging from Foot Patrol to The Golden Hornet Project, and from Pong to The Flametrick Subs. Saturday sees Room 710 bring in Black Irish Texas’s psychobilly stylings, Mr. Lewis & the Funeral Five’s innovative, experimental concoctions, The Box Spring Hogs’ Tom Waits covers, and Corinne Rose’s Americana strains to ensure that an eclectic mix of Austin based talent gets a chance to showcase its virtues. The entire brouhaha continues on Sunday with The Best Free Show In Town featuring the Chris Toast Trio before culminating with Heart & Soul Sound System’s DJ set (with Captain Jim Bradford at the helm) on the 23rd.
Not to be forgotten amidst the Room 710 mania is Beerland’s Saturday evening celebration of seven years in service. The D-I-Y styled, bareboned venue hosts The Fleshtones, The Ugly Beats, and Lovetaps on the 21st to mark another year of unending punk and garage rock offerings to the Austin public.DJ Mel’s monthly dance party known as Swoll takes place at the Beauty Bar on Saturday. DJ Mel has already made a lasting impression on our city with his Rock the Casbah events and per his MySpace page, Swoll “focuses on everything in the higher BPM range and things that facilitate full-on debauchery.” Nice one!
News of Horse + Donkey’s CD release gig at Hole in the Wall this Saturday was somewhat of a surprise to us, considering we attended the band’s CD release show just recently at the same venue. Well, it turns out that the prolific trio has wrapped up work on their second record already; Dreams should be available at Saturday's concert according to drummer Luis Martinez.
Taking a page out of the SXSW day show book, Guero’s, along with The Loyalty Firm and NORML, present First Day Of Summer Fest in the Oak Garden at the fabled Taco Bar on South Congress. The free event kicks off at noon with KUT 90.5 FM’s Laurie Gallardo hosting, and The Boxing Lesson headlining at 8 p.m.Other alternatives on Saturday include Grand Archives at Stubb’s and Lee Simmons at The Mohawk. The Ready Aim Fire! target Red 7 on Saturday with their brand of synth-pop (which can also be found on Strong Enough, self-released recently by the California outfit). NAVDO's Summer Becomes Eclectic! show at Antone’s is another option with live music from some choice local acts -- Ringo Deathstarr, Ume, Hope Irish, The Wonderful Avenue, and Good Luck Academy. Lastly, there is a midnight to 6 a.m. “All Night 60’s Dance Party” called Dig It! at 501 Studios, piloted by DJ Super K.
