Local Music News & Notes: My Education, Haunting Oboe Music & The Roller
- One of our favorite post-rock acts here in town, My Education, have a new album called Bad Vibrations. Until our review, get a sampling over at NPR Music, where the band is featured on Second Stage.
- Stream Sunday night's Shearwater show at D.C.'s Black Cat at NPR Music while you're there.
- Though Spoon isn't really from here anymore, Britt Daniel pops up often enough around town for us to consider their happenings relevant. Over at Daytrotter, a special session with the now Portland-based rockers is tempting listeners with an unreleased cover of Paul Simon's "Peace Like a River".
- Haunting Oboe Music is still doing one EP per month during 2008, and you can now grab the first four volumes on iTunes. Our thoughts on April and May coming soon.
- Up and coming local metal act The Roller play this weekend at Room 710's 8th Anniversary party to kick off a tour and celebrate the release of their new album. Sample their sound courtesy of Monofonus Press here: "Rattle of the Shaman" (mp3).
- Slimthug (along with Lil A and Lil Nash) will be at Club Escapade on Thursday night. Follow the jump for more information, or watch the video for Wamp Wamp (What It Do).
- There is an interview with Old 97s frontman Rhett Miller at Popmatters.
- Dripping Springs resident Sam Beam aka Iron & Wine performed at MPR's studios, and you can also catch an archived performance from Austin's KUT right here.
- La Snacks needs a new drummer.
- Several local songwriters make an appearance on the 2008 Americana Music Association Honors and Awards Nominees list this week. Best album nominees include Houston's Hayes Carll, Austin's James McMurtry, Alison Kraus & Robert Plant and Levon Helm.
- Speaking of good albums, the Statesman's 360 blog has released a short list of their Top 10 local albums of 2008 (so far). Shearwater, Mother Truckers, Dan Dyer, the Black Angels and Alejandro Escovedo make appearances.
