Weird War’s Alex Minoff and Golden’s Ian Eagleson traveled to Kenya in 2004 to join musician Otieno Jagwasito form the band Extra Golden and record the seminal Ok-Oyot System in 2006. The trip and subsequent recording process was a once in a lifetime event – the album was put to tape in a Nairobi nightclub in three hours using a dilapidated drum set, and it turned out to be Jagwasi’s last recording with the band, as he passed away from AIDS soon thereafter.
After the release of Ok-Oyot on Thrill Jockey records, the remaining members and new singer/guitarist Opiyo Bilongo toured the States, which proved to be a complicated and messy procedure, requiring the finesse of none other than Barack Obama to get their visas approved. Since then, the band holed up in Pennsylvania with more adroit recording/drumming equipment, released an album last year called Hera Ma Nono, and are touring once again.
On Sunday, the group hits Club Deville with local “Zimbabwean style marimba” band Rattletree Marimba, DJ Manola Black and the foot fetishism funk of Foot Patrol. It's as authentic a benja experience as you're likely to have in Austin anytime soon.
