Feel the Writing on the Wall: Pieced Together at Gallery Lombardi

You don’t see graffiti tags popping out of ornate frames very often, but Pieced Together, on exhibit at Gallery Lombardi through July 5, showcases a vibrant collision of fine art and street art.

It's a subversion of constraints that radiates power in the form of color like you’ve never seen, courtesy of twenty Texas aerosol artists and contest winner Won Kim, aka Revise, from Chicago.

The day before Pieced Together’s opening reception, curator Rachel Koper worked with the show’s featured artists to transform the wall behind the gallery into a collective masterpiece of haunting characters, distinctive tags, and explosive color. The spontaneous and striking work of art, visible from the alley off of Rio Grande and West 7th, looks right at home behind Gallery Lombardi.

Aerosol aficionados Supa, Enks, Supher, Color, Gonzo, Soner, Ucron, Grave, DuRock, Dmise, News, Mez, Spain, and Sloke are sure to stretch viewers’ artistic bounds, twisting and curling them into a mind-tag. Pieced Together is a primal experience, bursting with invigorating raw energy and a thrilling urgency that one doesn’t always feel when staring at walls. The gallery’s spacious outside area also features the freshly sprayed stylings of Chicago artist Revise, who was chosen to paint a live panel at the opening reception last Saturday. His piece, which emerged before an enthralled audience in all its fume-ridden glory, still stands as a feast for the eyes, but the nostrils get a break.

Gallery Lombardi (602A W. 7th Street) is open from noon to six, Tuesday through Saturday. Pieced Together runs through July 5.
