Ocote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesada The Alchemist Manifesto (ESL)

Martín Perna's (Antibalas, frequent collaborator with TV on the Radio) latest project, Ocote (o-KOH-tay) Soul Sounds, is a collaboration with Adrian Quesada of Grupo Fantasma and features a group of seven plus musicians, offering a sound that comes from somewhere in between downtown and the dance floor. The duo are following up their debut, El Nino Y El Soul, which received primarily wonderful reviews.

The new record is what you'd expect from Ocote Soul: Latin-fused jams with equal parts salsa, disco, afro-beat and hip-hop. They're all over the map when it comes to their influences, and Manifesto's surprise lurks in the application of these roots. The mood of this record is quite familiar to those who enjoyed the first, but we do find them venturing a little further into the wide world of experimentation and abstraction. Overall, the results are a resounding success, and the slight shift in the use of their artillery of instruments demonstrates their ability to stretch and reform their own direction.

Ocote Soul Sound will perform June 24 at Stubb's with Thievery Corporation, followed by a midnight after party at Beauty Bar.
