Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Get Busy @ Beauty Bar & Singer @ Emo's

Sure, there’s a dance party almost every weekend at Beauty Bar, but this Saturday’s line-up is something special. A trio of Texas based turntablists -- DJ Jester The Filipino Fist, Ernest Gonzales, and Bad Knives Dead Art (formerly known as Ceeplus Bad Knives and a.k.a Eric Castillo) should keep you on the dance floor all night long. We witnessed DJ Jester in all his glory a couple of months ago at The Mohawk and we can attest that a wide variety of genres and grooves can be expected. (Read our recent interview with DJ Jester here -- the Boca Burger Mobile story never gets old!) Gonzales has been lighting up San Antonio’s night life with his invigorating remixes and has also put out various releases, some under the Theory of Everything moniker although 2007’s While on Saturn’s Rings record was released under his given name, and demonstrated his versatility as a musician and producer. As for Castillo, he has been putting on cutting edge dance events in Houston, and has supplied the beats at past Austinist events to boot. Per the Bad Knives MySpace page, “Currently Cee's sought after, open minded dj sets involve creatively mixing, live editing, re-mixing, scratching and blending the diverse sounds of underground disco not disco, electro, indie rock, pop, fun hiphop, punk-post punk, no wave, rare groove funk/soul, and more.” Phew! Time to Get Busy then.

Chicago’s Singer plays Emo’s (Inside) on Saturday as well, bringing with them inventive song structures and intriguing vocal harmonies. Singer is comprised of Adam Vida, Ben Vida, Robert Lowe, and Todd Rittman who all take turns at the microphone while the malleable backdrops they create are largely soothing even if eccentric. The band members have done their rounds in the indie-rock circles with acts such as U.S. Maple and 90 Day Men while Lowe also employs Lichens as an alias for his personal projects. Singer is supporting their Unhistories release (read our review here), out now on Drag City. For a complete change of pace, make your way to Saxon Pub where Adam Carroll’s astute storytelling and Americana strains will take center stage. The show marks the release of Carroll’s new album, Old Town Rock N Roll.

Soundcheck Magazine celebrates the launch of its brand spankin’ new website at Emo’s (Inside) on Friday with music from a host of exceptional Austin artists -- Corto Maltese, Frank Smith, Death is not a joyride, Southern Drama, and Kevin Adickes (from Moth!Fight!) -- all for FREE!

And of course, The Cure is the marquee show for Sunday night. Although we have not seen our favorite “Charlotte Sometimes” on most of the recent setlists, we still plan on being front and center for this one. Sometimes we dream. The massive concert takes place at Austin Music Hall while the explosive opening act 65DaysofStatic will also play later on at Emo’s (Inside) with promising locals Cry Blood Apache and The Boxing Lesson.
