Whatcha doin’ Saturday night? You could punish your eardrums with bands like Doom Siren and Disempower at the Broken Neck, enjoy the Scoot Inn’s Coney Island Fest (which, with any luck, will serve up those delicious mid-west morsels they call coney dogs), or you could step into a Valium haze with those country-echo pioneers The Cowboy Junkies at The One World Theater. But to experience some raw rock’n’roll, you might be better off treading down to Emo’s Lounge.
Anyway, Diagonals,She, Sir, Follow That Bird! and Many Birthdays will combine their forces at the Lounge that evening, and what a grab-bag of surprises this show is set to be. The last time we saw Diagonals, it was at a house party where the cops were summoned twice and the band barely had room to play what with all the dancing, beer spillage, etc. This time around, the roomy Lounge should be more than enough for the sneeringly literate, organ-fueled five-piece to flex their muscles. The band also has an EP in the works with the impressive multi-media start-up Monofonus Press, with a release set for the near future.
You’ll also see Many Birthdays, an Austin-based project with easily discernible Japanese roots. An electro-heavy project whose work has even been translated into a remix record last year, they have a new EP promised for 2008. Also playing are Follow That Bird!, a band who share a name with arguably the best/saddest Sesame Street movie to date. An energetic trio whose big noise and sound can trace its genesis to the now sadly defunct Sleater-Kinney, their ace in the hole might just be their right-on rhythm section, particularly energetic drummer Tiffanie Lanmon.
She, Sir, who have collaborated with Many Birthdays member Henna Chou, have released an EP entitled Who Can’t Say Yes and apparently have a full-length in the works. While their website clearly states that “you have the right to expect a well-designed, meticulously considered product from a band that consists of two academically-trained composers,” referencing members M. Grusha and Russell Karloff, that product does sound an awful lot like shoegaze in the end. Pop into the Emo’s Lounge on Saturday evening and decide for yourself.
