The Paramount's Summer Film Series Continues: Noir is the New Black

Summer is here, and as the mercury continues to rise, many will seek shelter in the icy coolness of movie theaters. The Paramount Theater has been keeping people cool while exposing their eyeballs to quality cinema for over ninety years. So what could be better than to chill out with some classic film?

The Paramount’s 2008 Summer Film Series continues Wednesday with Chinatown, followed by L.A. Confidential, and switches the order Thursday for those who can’t make it all in one night. Two classic, award-winning noir flicks for the price of one in a theater as old as the detective genre itself—now that’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Thrill to the classic noir of Roman Polanski’s 1974 thriller starring Jack Nicholson as a tough talking P.I., Faye Dunaway as his femme fatale, and more cool detective action than you can shake a stick at. Robert Towne’s Academy Award-winning script has so many twists and turns you won’t even want to take a bathroom break.

L.A. Confidential swaps out the 1930s for the 1950s, but the dark Los Angeles crimeworld is still chock full of villainy, even if stars Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, and Kevin Spacey don’t always know who the real villains are. Kim Basinger plays the sultry seductress with a dark secret in this one, and picked up an Oscar for her performance. Curtis Hanson’s interpretation of James Ellroy’s novel has all the staples of the classic genre flick, but gives it a fresh feel, making you feel like you could almost reach through the smoke-filled screen and join their world; and Dante Spinotti’s cinematography feels like you’re looking at an Edward Hopper painting.

If you like classic detective stories with cigarettes, highballs of scotch, and high-class dames with great gams, (and who doesn’t, really?), these are two of the best. As you watch these palookas working their way to the bottom of a good mystery, you’ll remember the other meaning of the word “cool."
