Austinist Show Previews: Matt Costa, The Delta Spirit, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, & Wild Sweet Orange

Whether you agree or disagree with Austin’s “Live Music Capital of the World” claim, there is little doubt that our city hosts a plethora of quality shows every week and offers boundless options to its fine citizens on a daily basis. This week, pick from a number of choices to supplement your everyday rat race activities. On Tuesday, Matt Costa holds court at The Parish with his informal tales wrapped up in pop melodies and topped with sprinkles of piano and harmonica. Costa was once an avid skateboarder but a serious injury ended that calling a few years ago, allowing him to concentrate on his musical career instead. Unfamiliar Faces was released in January of this year on Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. The soulful Americana flavor of The Delta Spirit precedes Costa. The act recently signed to Rounder Records, who plan to re-release Ode to Sunshine, the band's self-released album recorded at a friend’s cabin in Julian, San Diego. The Delta Spirit performed on KCRW 89.9 FM’s Morning Becomes Eclectic last month -- check it out here.

Also on Tuesday, legendary British band Swervedriver brings wall to wall guitar-noise to Emo’s with our beloved 21st century shoegaze flag bearers Ringo Deathstarr opening. If you’d prefer to enjoy live music immediately after your 8-5 shift, head over to Waterloo Records for a CD release special in-store performance by The Mother Truckers. The band will be previewing material off Let’s All Go To Bed, their third full-length, set to hit streets today. Released on Funzalo Records, the new effort is chock-full of the stomping Americana and energetic bluesy roots-rock we’ve come to expect and love from the band. Besides having a cleverly coined name and a self-professed tag of being “a kick-ass rock 'n' roll band from Austin, Texas”, The Mother Truckers also contributed two tracks off their latest album to the upcoming movie Roller Dollz, “the big budget production from adult industry titans Adam & Eve Pictures and Zero Tolerance”, including the title track (appropriately we are assuming!)

Having turned back the clock recently at Antone’s, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings return to Austin on Wednesday at Stubb’s. The outfit’s brilliant funk 'n soul harks backs to decades past but is easily, equally enjoyable in today’s day and age. As a bonus, the band will be at KUT 90.5 FM’s studios at 2 p.m. on Music with Jay Trachtenberg for a brief live performance. Don’t miss it -- you can listen to it here! There is also an “Unofficial After Party” at Lamberts with Prince Klassen at the helm -- details on the flyer to the right.

On the same evening, Antone’s is home to Augustana and Wild Sweet Orange’s poignant pop pieces and lush soundscapes. The former is supporting 2008’s Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt record (out now on Epic Records) while the latter’s debut full-length We Have Cause to Be Uneasy will be released by Canvasback Music in July. One last noteworthy event on Wednesday -- Psychotropic -- a regular event that began in Seattle but has since revitalized in Austin on the first and third Wednesday each month at Club de Ville offers up live music in the form of Toko-Ri Get High’s garage rock on this night, along with sufficient psychedelic beats courtesy of the regular Psychotropic DJs.
