The Black Angels’ CD release show leads Friday’s choices of stellar live music in town. The show takes place on Emo’s outside stage while Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s headline inside. Grupo Fantasma celebrate the release of their new record Sonidos Gold on Friday as well, at The Mohawk. Alternatively, pick from a plethora of other downtown options -- Lick Lick at Room 710, Ume at Beauty Bar, The Ugly Beats at Beerland, Big Head Todd & the Monsters at Stubb’s, or Built By Snow at The Parish.
Those Peabodys are Saturday evening’s best bet for a CD release event (at The Mohawk) -- it has been five years since the release of Unite Tonight and the time is indeed ripe for Animal Saturday. The new record drops on May 20th (Little Mafia Records), featuring the band’s thunderous, catchy riffs, no doubt. Infinite Partials’ CD release bash is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Okay Mountain and admission is free.
Car Stereo (Wars) brings magical mashes, pretty people, and a sweaty dance party to Beauty Bar as usual. This is your last chance to catch the mash-up maestro in action for a few months -- Chris Rose will be making the trip across the pond to Europe, returning in September. The Strange Boys and Shapes Have Fangs bear pop fruits at Beerland while Li'l Cap'n Travis and Brothers and Sisters bring southern strained melodies to Continental Club on Saturday evening as well. For those about to rock? Dangerous Toys turn back the clock at Red Eyed Fly, Amplified Heat saturate in blues-metal sludge at Emo’s (Inside), and Riverboat Gamblers bring ferocious rock n’ roll to Red 7. For slightly more delicate fare, head to The Parish where Centro-matic, along with South San Gabriel and Sarah Jaffe tread on softer terrain.
And don’t forget about the fiesta at Waterloo Park all day on Saturday. The inaugural Pachanga Latino Music Festival takes place on the 31st with music from the likes of Vallejo, Maneja Beto, Girl In A Coma, and Nortec Collective’s Bostich + Fussible (to name a few) -- the flyer on the right offers full details and some easy math. Nortec Collective’s Bostich + Fussible will also be performing at End of an Ear at 6 p.m. on Friday -- sample some of their music courtesy of Nacional Records -- “Brown Bike” and “Tijuana Sound Machine”. The extremely effective combination venue that is the United States Art Authority and Spider House host a fundraiser on Saturday starting at 6 p.m. to raise money for Yellow Bike Project’s new headquarters and also to celebrate 11 years of YBP’s respectable work in the community. Live music from Blackholicus and Foot Patrol, along with bike races, an art show, and much more should make for a fun evening, all for a good cause!
Massachusetts act The Dresden Dolls play Stubb’s on Sunday with Smoosh and The Insect Fable opening. The Dresden Dolls are supporting their No, Virginia… EP release. (In case you’re wondering, Yes, Virginia… was released in 2006.) The new EP, although recorded this year, also utilizes material written many years ago. The duo of Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione combines versatile piano pop ditties all while wearing their affinity for cabaret and their penchant for theatre on their sleeves, resulting in some extremely fascinating live performances. Some of the lyrics are quite intriguing as well to add to the allure of it all. Don’t miss it -- this act once opened for Nine Inch Nails and also gave us the 2004 classic “Coin Operated Boy”.

Dresden Dolls is on Sunday, not Saturday.
Thanks! I fixed the details.
